Translation notices and attributions
Everything Ardent Word shows that somebody else made, with the licence it is used under and the notice that licence requires. Where a source asks for credit, the credit is here, and it is also in the app, on shared verse images and on verse link pages.

New King James Version
Scripture taken from the New King James Version®. Copyright © 1982 by Thomas Nelson. All rights reserved.
It is bundled in the app, unencrypted and ungated, and it is the default translation. It is not fetched from a third-party Bible API and has no dependency on one.
The source carries the words of Christ in red. It does not carry section headings, translators’ footnotes or supplied-word italics, so the package ships without them. Where headings would help, the Berean Standard Bible headings can be shown and are clearly labelled as Berean editorial headings rather than presented as part of the New King James Version.
Berean Standard Bible
Dedicated to the public domain on 30 April 2023. Attribution is appreciated rather than required, and it is given here and in the app.
The Berean Standard Bible carries 3,016 section headings, 4,854 translator footnotes and 1,325 parallel passage references, and marks the words of Jesus. The Berean name must not be used for altered text, and Ardent Word never alters it.
Sixteen verse numbers
Sixteen verse numbers familiar from the King James Version are not present in the Berean Standard Bible, because the text they contain is not in the earliest manuscripts. Ardent Word marks those verse identifiers as omitted and shows the translators’ footnote in place, rather than silently skipping a number and leaving you to wonder.

That acknowledgement is shown to readers in the United Kingdom. Permission for United Kingdom distribution is requested from Cambridge University Press before release; if it is not granted, the King James Version is restricted in the United Kingdom rather than shipped without permission.
The text used is the 1769 edition, with the words of Jesus, supplied-word italics, the divine name, marginal notes and Psalm titles preserved.

All four are self-hosted. Your browser makes no request to a third party to load a typeface on this website.
Software
Ardent Word is built on a great deal of open source software. The complete list of packages and their licences is generated from the dependency manifests and published with the first release, in the app under Settings, About, Licences and on this page.
The apps themselves, the backend, this website and the design system are the work of Ardent Africa Foundation.
The Ardent Word emblem
The emblem, the Emmaus companion mark and the wordmark belong to Ardent Africa Foundation. They may not be reproduced, altered or used to represent another product or organisation.
The emblem’s geometry is informed by adinkra construction, which is the visual language of the place Ardent Word was made. It is an acknowledged influence, not a reproduction: no traditional symbol is copied, traced or recoloured, and the mark should never be described as an adinkra symbol.
What you may do with scripture from the app
Read it, copy it, share it, print it for your congregation, put it in a lesson, and send it to somebody who needs it. That is what it is for, and the sharing features exist to make it easy.
What you may not do is extract a translation in bulk, build a database, an app or a product from it, or republish it as your own work. Where a translation is under copyright, those limits are the rights holder’s, not ours to waive.
- Every shared verse image carries the reference, the translation and the required notice.
- Every verse link page carries the same.
- Scripture is reproduced exactly. Ardent Word never paraphrases it, shortens it to fit, or restyles it for emphasis.
